BTS is a South Korean group formed in Seoul in 2010, which debuted on June 13, 2013 under Big Hit Music. It is composed of seven members: Jin, Suga, J-Hope, RM, Jimin, V and Jungkook, who co-write and co-produce most of their album material. Despite being created with a primarily hip hop style, he has come to incorporate a wide variety of genres into his musical repertoire.
After debuting with the single album 2 Cool 4 Skool in 2013, BTS released the EPs O!RUL8,2? (2013) and Skool Luv Affair (2014), as well as their first studio album, Dark & Wild (2014). Beginning in 2015, he began to establish his reputation as a socially conscious group with his releases of The Most Beautiful Moment in Life: Part 1 (2015), Part 2 (2016) and Young Forever (2016). It continued to extend this image with Wings, which was its first album to market over one million copies in South Korea, and with its re-release You Never Walk Alone. By 2017, he entered the global music market as the leading promoter of the Korean wave, especially in the United States, and broke multiple sales records. He became the first Korean artist to receive an RIAA certification, with his single "MIC Drop"; to top the Billboard 200 chart, with Love Yourself: Tear (2018); and to go platinum in the U.S., with Love Yourself: Answer (2018). In addition, it had four number one albums in the U.S. in less than two years, a success that no band had achieved since The Beatles did it between 1995 and 1996. On the other hand, in 2020 he was the first artist to simultaneously top the Billboard Global 200 and the Billboard Hot 100, with his Grammy-nominated single "Dynamite". He subsequently repeated this with "Savage Love", "Life Goes On", "Butter" and "Permission to Dance", thus accumulating five number one singles in the U.S. and becoming the artist to do so in the shortest time since Michael Jackson, who achieved it between 1987 and 1988.
BTS is the best-selling artist in the history of South Korea, with more than thirty million on Gaon Music Chart, and holds the record for the best-selling album in that country with Map of the Soul: 7. Likewise, he is the first and only non-English speaking artist to be named as the Global Artist of the Year (2020) by IFPI, to be on Billboard's Top Touring Artists of the 2010s list and to give a concert -with all tickets sold out- at Wembley Stadium. On the other hand, Time magazine included them on the cover of its international edition as "Leaders of the New Generation" and they have appeared in several of its listings; they were among the 25 most influential people on the Internet, from 2017 to 2019, and among the 100 most influential people in the world in 2019, in which they were dubbed "Princes of Pop".
The group has received numerous accolades for their work, including six American Music Awards, nine Billboard Music Awards and nominations at the Grammy and Brit Awards. After establishing its Love Myself anti-violence campaign in partnership with UNICEF, it gave a speech at both the 73rd and 75th United Nations General Assemblies. In addition, its members are the youngest recipients of the Order of Cultural Merit, awarded by the President of South Korea for helping to spread Korean culture and language around the world.
