Merry AFXmas!
This is a telescoping fidget-toy/Christmas ornament for those that want a little more of that Aphex Acid on their tree this year.
It lays/hangs flat on the tree but when tilted back telescopes out over six times it's original depth for that stunning collapsed look!
This design is very much inspired by the amazing T69 Collapse music video released earlier this year. I loved the look of the AFX-ified Gwennap Pit and wanted a physical version to play with and this satisfies that need to a T. Since it's around Christmas time, I decided to make it the proper size to hang on a tree too with a built-in channel to you can tie it up with fancy ribbon or thread.
Creation Notes
Starting with the collapsed vector source art from energyface on reddit, the work was opened in Inkscape and flattened down before insetting the paths by 0.25mm to create the gaps. From there the resulting svg was imported into Fusion 360 realized in 3D via a process of extrusion, adding tabs/slots on four external points for each ring, and final clean up. The entire procedure was completed casually over 3 days with 3 failed testing prints due to physical printer part fatigue. Luckily I was able to get a couple good specimens printed before having to wait for replacement pulleys and endstop switches!
Printing Notes
It's not that hard of a print, just be sure to have your extrusion rate dialed in since the rings are only 0.25mm apart and, when popping it off the plate, go slow on each level!

Printed in Zyltech ceramic white PLA at 200c with a 50c heatbed. The layer height was 0.2mm but could go thicker. Go as thick as you want, the sides don't impact the look! Only one shell layer was printed on the sides since I wanted the four top/bottom shells to butt right up against the contours for a solid look. Infill was the new Cura gyroid pattern with 3mm line distance or around 15%.
Total print time was around four and a half hours.
