Description

The first week of December 2023, I received a text message from a dear friend. She wanted to give her Marine husband a Christmas Tree ornament that resembled a ROLEX watch, but having looked couldn’t find anything acceptable. She asked if I could print her one. The RELAX Christmas Tree Ornament was my answer to that question.

Designed with Fusion 360, it consists of 5 printed parts, clock movement and 2, 2mm screws to attach the rear bulb. Printed with a 0.2mm nozzle and 0.1mm layer height, to make the text legible in 4 PLA colors (Silver, White, Blue and Black), the print time was close to 19 hours on my Bambu Labs P1S with AMS (a present to myself end of November 2023). If multi-color printing is not an option, the face could be painted very carefully.

For those that use the Bambu Studio slicer, I’ve included a project file with the colors and orientations set. Additionally, I've included my Fusion 360 design file to allow you to modify the hand tolerances to fit your specific printer and clock specifications.

Parts:

  • 5 printed parts:
    • Ornament face (orient with back of the face toward the build plate)
    • Bulb back
    • Hour hand (orient with hand face toward the build plate)
    • Minute hand (orient with hand face toward the build plate)
    • Second hand (orient with hand face toward the build plate)
  • Clock movement:
  • 2, 2 x 8mm screw, to attach the bulb to the face.
  • 1, AA battery

Printer/Slicer Setup

  • All parts are printed with a 0.2mm nozzle and a 0.1mm layer height, although to speed up the printing time the bulb could be printed with a larger nozzle and layer height. The small nozzle is required to have face’s text legible.
  • Top layers: 7
  • Bottom layers: 5
  • Walls: 4
  • 15% fill for face and bulb, clock hands should have a 50% fill.
  • Support is not required for the face or hands. The bulb back quality would improve with use of supports.

Assembly

  1. Print the parts.
  2. Cut off the top mounting loop from the clock movement. This allows it to fit centered within the bulb.
  3. Screw the 3/8” clock shaft into the ornament face until the top of the screws are even with the top of the ornament face.
  4. Install the hour, minute and second hand onto the clock shaft.
  5. Install an AA battery into the clock movement.
  6. Using the 2, M2 x 8mm screws attach the bulb to the face.
  7. Thread a festive string through the hole on the top of the face wristband.
  8. Hang in a prominent position on your Christmas tree.
